SUGAR CREEK (58AR)
If Thaden Field is the Gateway to the Ozarks, then Sugar Creek is the gateway airstrip for anyone wanting to go beyond the paved, fenced, and standard approach airport. In fact, if you are approaching from the east or west, the technique for landing can be vastly different.
Once you land, taxi over to the camping area or up to the FLY OZ lounge located in the hay barn turned hangout. FLY OZ members and those who have stopped in to Thaden Field for a guest pass can use a keycard to access the restroom, shower, refreshments, and what looks to be a view of an untouched piece of the Ozarks. Hidden in the hills across the valley is Handcut Hollow a network of bike trails behind a historic schoolhouse turned trailhead.
You do not need permission to land at Sugar Creek, however, it is at your own risk. Be sure to know your aircraft performance capabilities and your abilities before landing. Surface can be wet/muddy after rain, and deer are sometimes active on the runway.
